Design from a point of reference

Clean up included hauling out all the building debris in addition to removal of over 50 damaged and dead trees.  Moving forward we were left with a clean slate to  begin the design phase.   Having spent so many years on the site we knew our point of reference in design would focus on the view, and that the new building blend well with the site.   The relationship of living area, dining space, and kitchen had always worked in the cabin so we chose to maintain those relationships in the plan.  Important to us were the view orientation, passive winter solar gain, shade in the summer, sheltered entry, and a balance of communal and private space.  We gave the task to our son Jay whose thoughtful design resulted in a home that was both creative and welcoming.
